There were times when the advancing people of Israel sought safe passage through a country, promising to keep to the main highway, taking nothing from the fields and leaving the wells alone. King Sihon of the Amorites would not listen to such undertakings and led his whole army against the Israelites. That was his mistake: the Amorites were defeated and the Israelites occupied all their towns. King Og of Bashan was the next to oppose the Israelites but he and his whole army suffered the same fate as the Amorites.
The people of Israel were no longer a rabble of migrant ex-slaves, but a feared fighting force. The Canaanite and Hittite kings became increasingly terrified by the invading horde, and they had every reason to be afraid. One after another, their cities were destroyed, and their land occupied by the Israelites. Midian, which had been in alliance with Moab and the Amorites, shared their fate. Nor were the battles to end even when the people of Israel finally crossed the River Jordan to enter the promised land. The spectacular defeat of Jericho and the destruction of Ai were yet to come, and all the conquests of the Canaanite lands under the leadership of Joshua still lay in the future.
The Ten Commandments
It was after only three months in the wilderness that Yahweh had led the Israelites as far as Mount Sinai and there established his covenant with them. Some say that these events took place at Mount Horeb. Yahweh called Moses up into the mountain and there declared that if Israel would listen to him and keep his covenant, they would become his special people, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. Moses carried this momentous news of this god’s promises down to the people and with one voice they cried out that whatever Yahweh said, they would do. Back up the mountain went Moses, to relay the Israelites’ response to God.
Then Moses began to receive the first of Yahweh’s laws, ten concise and unambiguous commandments, followed by many more detailed precepts. Once more, Moses descended Mount Sinai and relayed to the people all that Yahweh had commanded. Once more, they cried out that whatever was required of them, they would do.
Moses was called back to the mountain again, this time with Aaron and his sons, accompanied by seventy elders, and they saw their god standing there, on a pavement of sapphire, as blue as the sky. Moses made a number of return visits to the holy mountain of Sinai, and continued to receive detailed laws concerning every aspect of the Israelites’ lives, how they were to worship, festivals to be observed, regulations for the family, how to behave with neighbours, dietary and hygiene laws, sexual and other moral precepts, punishment for crimes, hospitality to strangers, how to treat their slaves, and many other commandments.
Yahweh handed Moses two stone tablets on which the law was engraved, written on both sides by the finger of God himself, and Moses carried them down the mountain.
